ALEJANDRA SPECTOR, LmSW

Hello!

APPROACH TO THERAPY Therapy is a partnership, and we will work collaboratively to achieve your goals. I believe in providing a compassionate and nonjudgmental space for you to process and grow. Everyone’s needs are different therefore I take a highly individualized approach when working with you. My background as a community organizer has also taught me that community care is self-care, and that social justice work is also healing work. Systemic oppression impacts our lives in many ways, and I invite you to unpack those issues in our sessions.

EDUCATION I received a Bachelor of Art degree in Spanish and Portuguese from the University of Texas at Austin and returned to UT Austin for a Master of Science in Social Work. PROFESSIONAL Before becoming a social worker, I was Director of Outreach for Mexicanos en Exilio; a non-profit dedicated to assisting Mexican activists and reporters gain political asylum while continuing to speak out against state corruption and impunity. I was invited to speak nationally and internationally on the situation on the U.S. Mexico border and had the privilege of working with incredibly courageous organizers and activists on both sides of the border. I was accepted to the UT Austin School of Social Work as a bilingual St. David’s Scholar. My first field placement was as a mental health care provider at El Buen Samaritano, an integrative primary care clinic that serves a large number of immigrants from Mexico and Central America, and in my last year of graduate school I interned with the YWCA of Greater Austin as a counseling intern and as a group facilitator for women at the T. Don Hutto Detention Center. I have worked in a private practice setting since 2021 and look forward to continuing that work with Central Austin Psychotherapy.

PERSONAL Outside of work I enjoy creative pursuits like making art and writing short stories, exploring trails with my dog, Paloma, and watching old movies. I studied western herbalism at The Sacred Journey School of Herbalism in Austin, Texas, and am a bit of a plant nerd.
